Ellon 1sts got their season off to a flying start when they destroyed Mannofield at Gordon Park on Saturday. Despite playing the majority of the game with 10 men as skipper Charles Wolrige-Gordon was delayed on the 4th road bridge. Stand in captain Jon Barrett sent Scott White out with the coin and outstanding young tosser won the coin flip and asked Mannofield to bat.

White opened the bowling with tear-away fast bowler Ross Wade and they immediately had the Mannofield batsmen in all sorts of trouble as there were no loose deliveries to score off.

Wade got Ellon’s first wicket of the season when he bowled West with an inswinging delivery then Barrett was next to strike having the obdurate Lawson caught by Andy Parks for 21 from 24 overs.

Ellon were fielding with 9 men at this stage after Cobus Huisman had to leave the field to apply some ice to a nasty lump on his shin and if only the Mannofield batsmen had realized how this would inspire him.

After Huisman had treated his injury he came back and destroyed the middle order picking up a hat-trick in the process when he had Lewis Jnr caught behind by Peter Bigley, Cross LBW then bowled Bala T.

Mannofield briefly regrouped with Premnath and captain Graeme Johnston but when Premnath was brilliantly caught by Watson off Wade the writing was on the wall and Scott White came back into the attack to dismiss Snoop lbw then bowl Ellon Rugby Club’s winger Alex Cadzow 1st ball.

Ellon were happy with keeping Mannofield down to 117 and didn’t envisage any problems knocking off the total. Ellon’s most successful bowler was Cobus Huisman who took 4 for 25 from 8 overs and was ably supported by Ross Wade who took 3 for 31 off his full 12 over allotment.

New look opening partnership Huisman and Craig White got the innings off to a great start with 33 coming from the 1st 3 overs before White was bowled for 0.

Jon Barrett joined Huisman and they knocked the runs off in double quick time with a succession on boundaries to ensure Cadzow didn’t have a happy debut for Mannofield with 54 runs coming off his 5 overs.

Huisman finished on 53 not out and Barrett on 47 not out to give Ellon a resounding victory.

Ellon are on their travels to Duthie Park next Saturday to play Artisans with Leon Borstlap and Harry Wolrige-Gordon both available it’s likely that Ellon will have one of their strongest teams of the season out on the park.
